The Origin of Leprechauns
Mischief, mayhem, and a bit of gold. These are the makings of our favorite magical creatures! Within a bit of Irish Folklore we find the Leprechaun. A small, bearded old man who stores gold at the end of a rainbow, grants wishes if caught by humans, and has a hankering for causing trouble when it suits him. But how did these guys come to be?
Though always based in Irish Folklore, the exact beginning of the leprechaun is unclear. The tale of the leprechaun can be found starting in texts from a seventeenth century Ireland. Some say they came from fairy shoemakers. Some say they may come from the Danish invasion of Ireland. The Danes are rumored to have enlisted these clever small fellows to keep their plundered wealth. Leprechauns would have then taken the coins and hid them across Ireland in pots. No matter how you believe they came about, one thing is always agreed upon: if you are lucky enough to catch one of these guys, your fortune will increase.
